About this Event
After settling in Il Porto, Italy, in 1958, the valley and her beloved Foxy became her greatest inspiration in almost all of her drawings.
Celebrate love in all forms with Love & Art – a stirring series of after-dark events exploring how romance and connection have inspired artistic creation.
Presented as part of our program series, these intimate evenings feature beloved local creatives whose work speaks to romantic, familial and platonic love.
In partnership with Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), State Library Victoria’s second iteration of Love and Art will go beyond the canvas and explore the creative legacy of Myers.
The evening begins with a screening of The Tightrope Dancer (1989), Ruth Cullen’s intimate documentary capturing Myers’s life, artistic process and uncompromising creative worldview. Followed by an in-depth panel interview unpacking the contemporary influence of Myers’s work.
The Library’s latest exhibition , featuring Vali Myers’ love letters, will be open to guests before the event and during the interval. MUMA’s current exhibition explores how artists enact ancestral, spiritual and embodied ways of knowing amid eroding trust in government and dominant Western frameworks. The exhibition is running until 2 April and includes artworks from Myers.
