Louisiana Orphan TrainFor over 70 years, groups of children were packed onto trains in New York and shipped to places throughout the United States. In places like Opelousas, Breaux Bridge, and Lafayette adults waited for a child to arrive on the train. This child might be a new family member or an indentured servant.
One of the stops was Terrebonne’s own Bayou Black. Martha and James from the Louisiana Orphan Train Museum in Opelousas will be at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, March 24th to share information on this piece of history that shaped the lives of over 200,000 children and their families. See how Terrebonne Parish, and perhaps your family, fit into this incredible tale.
For more information contact Stefanny Chaisson at the Terrebonne Parish Library 985-876-5861 ext. 234 or Martha Aubert at the Louisiana Train Museum at [email protected].
