The textile installation pours into the belly of the ship like a glowing golden waterfall. Lotte Günther created the site-specific work for Hošek Contemporary in over 170 hours of work. From something very simple - a strip of fabric - a complex structure gradually emerges. - A process of growth. The artwork is charged with time. The countless strips of fabric are sewn according to a simple principle. Whenever a strip ends, the artist adds 2 more. This gives the cloth more and more width, creates luxurious folds and ends in a huge wavy train on the floor. Overall, the result is a warm golden-yellow color impression. However, the work thrives on the great variety of fabrics. In addition to the color family of yellow, golden fabrics, earth tones and shades of blue were also used. Heavy velvet fabrics with a luxurious sheen meet glittering sequin fabrics. The overall impression changes with every step the viewer takes. Sometimes some elements glitter in the light. Some strips of canvas are painted. And the painter's eye is also evident in the delicate combination of colors. Lotte Günther has been collecting textiles from a wide variety of sources for years. She finds many of them second-hand.
The work can be read purely abstractly. It can also be understood as a commentary on the fast-moving textile industry. Fabric is a very versatile and ambivalent material. On the one hand, weaving is one of the oldest cultural techniques of mankind. It satisfies a primal need for protection. In many cultures, weaving is a highly symbolic metaphor. The slow accumulation and growth can stand for the fabric of our lives. On the other hand, textiles are highly devalued in today's world. Through fast fashion, it is a waste problem and stands for overconsumption and exploitation of people and the environment at all stages of production. Lotte Günther tries to give the materials back their dignity and preciousness. This is supported by the unique atmosphere of Hošek Contemporary. The work glows even more against the dark background of the ship's architecture. Illuminated and placed in the middle of the room, it creates an almost sacral impression. In addition, viewers can move around the installation. Thus, the reverse side also becomes visible. This shows even more clearly the traces of work and thus also the time that has been spent on the artwork. The monumental installation is flanked by smaller sculptural objects. Sculptures made of knotted satin ribbons and ceramics are evocative of found objects from the sea and, despite their completely different dimensions, have a similar relationship to time. A hanging soft sculpture made of red chenille fabric appears organic, oscillating between beauty and strangeness.

About the artist:
Lotte Günther studied fine arts at the Kunsthochschule Mainz (Prof. Winfried Virnich), at the ÉSBA Toulouse (Prof. Katharina Schmidt) and at the UdK Berlin (Prof. Pia Fries). Since graduating in 2011, she has realized numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and France and has received several scholarships and prizes. Her most recent artist residency was in BigCi, Bilpin, Australia in 2024. She works in Wolfsheim in Rheinhessen and Berlin. Alternating between life in the countryside and in the vibrant (art) capital, she has found her ideal working conditions.
