About this Event
Architecture criticism in Los Angeles needs your help! Join Los Angeles Review of Architecture and New York Review of Architecture on Thursday, October 17, at the Art Room in DTLA to show your support for independent design writing about the city's built environment.
This past February, the team at worked with guest editor Mimi Zeiger to launch the first Los Angeles Review of Architecture, or, as we fondly call it, LARA. The debut issue was written up in the, which, in addition to praising the “diversity of stories and voices,” welcomed the arrival of a locally rooted platform dedicated to design, architecture and urban issues in Los Angeles. and are therefore organizing a series of gatherings to raise funds to commission more pieces and produce future issues. LARA featured stories from LA-based writers including Alissa Walker, creator of the Torched newsletter, David Michon, founder of For Scale, and Shane Reiner Roth. Angelenos seemed to agree—more than 400 people attended the launch party, held at the Silverlake offices of Bestor Architecture. None of it would have been possible without the support of our sponsors.
We hope to keep publishing LARA and are therefore organizing a series of gatherings to raise funds to commission more pieces and produce future issues.
LARA contributors, Mimi Zeiger, and publisher Nicolas Kemper will share updates at the kickoff event, hosted by Brian Wickersham of AUX Architecture.
Entry is free, but we encourage you to peruse our support levels:
$96: Griffith Observatory
Start a supporter-tier subscription with this link, and we will count the amount toward our goal. You will also receive the much coveted LARA hat, made by local indie artisans, which we are taking into a limited second run just for this occasion.
Contribute at this level, and your name will be mentioned in the next issue of LARA. You will also receive an institutional subscription to NYRA, a seat at our next LA dinner, a poster of the issue centerfold comprising idiosyncratic landmarks selected by notable Angelenos, and the hat. Link here.
All of the Palisades perks, two seats at our next LA dinner, and a limited-edition print of original art work. And two hats. Link here.
Same perks as the Verdugos level, plus even deeper satisfaction of supporting independent publishing. And three hats. Link here.
$20,000 +: Mountain Climber
If we are to allow LARA to realize its full potential, we will need to be able to make major investments, such as employing a local editor. If you are able, consider writing us at [email protected] to make a larger gift and help us get there.
We are aiming to raise at least $20,000, and will update our progress toward that goal as we receive new pledges. So far we have $7,500 pledged toward the goal from West of West, Stayner Architects, Koning Eizenberg, and Julie Taylor.
To pay directly, use the links above. Note: we are not a 501c3, so any direct payments will not be tax-deductible. To pledge or make a tax-deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor, please write to us at [email protected].
For all new support and pledges, we will update our total on this page, add your name, and mention you at the event.
