Join us to see a retrospective of the work of Rob Kangas. He has been showing photography since 1979, and taught photography at Oakland Community College for 38 years. 8 solo shows later, with work appearing in the DIA among 75 others, he is still going strong. "So, to start off, I’m a lifelong film guy. Sure, I also make digital photographs like everybody else. But when it comes to art photographs, I’m a film guy. We are all unavoidably imprinted by our 1st love. My time and circumstances dropped me into the heyday of 35mm film. After decades in the darkroom, I now follow a hybrid practice of recording my images on film and outputting onto digital media.
"I still enjoy the physical tasks of film. I like practicing the care and skill required where there are no do-overs. Every decision counts, just like in life.
"A significant portion of my mature work departs from the single frame. My work utilizes sequencing, montage, manipulating time and light. For most of my work over the last 40 + years, I’ve tried to create images that explore comparison, juxtaposition and collision. All multiple overlapping exposures and adjacency are shot contiguously in camera. Color and grain come from chemistry. The prints are unedited faithful representations of the negatives." Rob Kangas
