40th anniversary all-dayer. Doors open at 3pm.
Wendy May's Locomotion returns to London to celebrate it's 40th anniversary with a special one off at 229 (opposite Great Portland Street) with the original DJ line up from the legendary club session.
After the demise of the Boothill Foot-Tappers, Wendy May started a regular Friday night club session at the Town & Country Club in London's Kentish Town (now know as the o2 Kentish Town Forum). Named 'Wendy May's Locomotion', the club ran for over 5 years pulling in more than 2,000 customers each week who danced to a mixture of vintage soul, funk, blues, mod jazz, ska and more.
Wendy May's Locomotion was mentioned in Nick Hornby's book '31 Songs' within his chapter 'Velvelettes - Needle in a Haystack' about being a regular Locomotion goer and big fan.
Frequented by the likes of Madness, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller, it became home from home for The Pogues. Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim did one of his first ever DJ sets warming up for Wendy when he was the bass player with The Housemartins, and Phill Jupitus first took to the decks at her club!
In 1987, Wendy May co-presented the last series of 'The Tube' for Channel 4 with Jools Holland & Paula Yates whilst also being the only female DJ & "youth presenter" on London's Capital Radio, giving live sessions to up & coming bands.
Beloved by a generation of club-goers, we are thrilled to bring Wendy May's Locomotion back to central London for a very special one-off 40th anniversary all day session.
An AGMP Concerts presentation.
