About this Event
Course code: 08 206
Booking will close on Friday 10th January 2025 at 12 noon.
Due to limited resources we are UNABLE TO ACCEPT LATE BOOKINGS after this date.
This course will take place in Room 2F02 of the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, Dundee.
In this six-week course, participants will look at the sources that can be used to investigate the subject of their interest. Local History may be the study of an individual building or community or an organisation that operated within that area of study. The tutor will show how sources that family historians use such as census returns, church records, wills and inventories can also be used for local history study. The use of maps and photographs will be examined and how planning applications can also be used for the history of both individual buildings and local communities. The tutor will also look at other records such as tax records, deeds and sasines, estate records and how these can be accessed. Local newspapers are a vital source of information for investigating local history particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, so an examination will be undertaken of how to best use them.
Tutor : Ken Nisbet
