Film Europe
Thursday evenings 6.30 - 9.00pm for 6 weeks 16th January - 27th February 2025 (NB - no class on 6 February).
This course will be held in Room 2S13, Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, Dundee DD1 5EN
After the Great War, the motion picture industry became increasingly global as film-makers recognised the unique nature of silent cinema as an international artistic language with the possibility to unite people of all nations in shared understanding. For European studios, collaboration was also the best way to combat the growing dominance of Hollywood, which was rapidly sucking up talent both behind and in front of the cameras. This new course will explore a unique moment in cinema in the second half of the 1920s when film-makers across Europe developed a distinctive international style, sharing resources and creative talent. The Film Europe movement survived into the 1930s but was killed off by the language barriers of sound and the growing political extremism of the time. The course will be illustrated by complete feature films and numerous extracts.
