Join us for RECOVERY DIARIES ON THE BIG SCREEN and witness eight moving stories of humans living with such mental health challenges as anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts and schizophrenia. After the film there will be a Q&A in theater with Recovery Diaries' Executive Director Gabriel Nathan, Director Glenn Holsten, and subjects from the film.
You will meet artists, activists and other inspiring humans such as yarn Bomber Nicole Nikolich, who creates vibrant works of art for the street that are filled with humor and hope and help her battle anxiety and depression; writer Gabe Nathan, who explores the destructive and/or constructive thoughts that we all have about ourselves and how they frame our personal narrative; disability rights activist Charles Horton, who speaks about his journey of acceptance and his experience as a member of a support group for gunshot violence survivors; the extraordinary Smith family, which includes artist Kambel Smith, a self-taught artist with autism whose large and intricate cardboard sculptures of architecturally significant American buildings are brought him fame and attention in the art world; writer Sarah An Myers, who uses the language of film to explore her lived experience with schizoaffective disorder; pianist Jonathan Biss, who examines the interplay between his lifelong passion for music and his own personal struggles with anxiety; Nick Emeigh, aka NAMI Man, a colorful and awe-inspiring superhero who roams the world fighting stigma and promoting mental health awareness; and musician Ashley Murray, a youth peer navigator for NAMI Philadelphia who lives with anxiety and depression and runs a therapeutic songwriting workshop for young people. These recovery journeys move beyond simple stories of people with a diagnosis – they are moving portraits of courage, warmth and joy, and testify about the potential for humans to connect and achieve, despite seemingly unsurmountable challenges.
