About this Event
Washington Park is one of Chicago’s most significant historic landscapes. It totals 345.67 acres and features indoor and outdoor recreation spaces for the community - including gymnasiums and sports courts, playgrounds, a lagoon, nature areas, a Harvest Garden, and an arboretum.
Volunteers help the Chicago Park District maintain the beauty of the park's natural areas. Our main task for this outing at Washington Park will be picking up trash as we explore and share the history of the park, assess what is growing (invasive and non-invasive plants), and see what birds have returned.
Be prepared for variable weather, uneven terrain, standing and/or walking for two or more hours, and working near insects and plants.
Things to Know:
- All necessary tools, supplies, gloves, and training will be provided.
- There is no toilet in the park
- Wear comfortable clothes and close toed shoes
- Dress for the weather
- Consider bringing sunscreen and insect repellant.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks to fuel up throughout the event
Parking & Meeting Point:
- We will meet at the waterfall. The waterfall is located near 57th and Payne near the small brick building. There is ample street parking along Payne Drive. Look for the volunteer signage.
Safety
While we strive to create the safest environment possible, it is impossible to eliminate all potential hazards when working outside in nature.
Volunteers are advised to wear long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and other seasonally-appropriate clothing that can get dirty.
Hazards may include stinging or biting insects, poison ivy, walking on uneven terrain, a fire to burn cut brush and inclement weather.
