Internationally-Known Irish Fiddle and Pipes Duo to Play in KennebunkThe internationally-known Irish music duo of Liz Knowles and Kieran O’Hare will perform in concert at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk on Sunday, June 14. The concert, part of the long-running “Concerts in West K!” series, will take place from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Museum’s Dane Street Program Center.
Those who were fortunate enough to attend Liz Knowles’ solo concert in Kennebunk in November, 2024, in which piper Kieran O’Hare joined her for a few numbers at the end of the show, know the quality of music they can expect to hear. Both Liz and Kieran are among the very best Irish musicians in the world today.
Knowles builds on her early foundation in classical music with a deep love for, and understanding of, Irish music. The result is a distinctive sound that combines the fire and finesse of traditional fiddling with the power and tonal richness of classical violin. She established herself as a dynamic performer and recording artist with her work on the soundtrack for “Michael Collins,” and as fiddler with “Riverdance,” in Broadway’s “The Pirate Queen” and in “The Green Bird.” She has also appeared as soloist with the New York Pops, and as featured artist for the Ireland 100 Festival at the Kennedy Center. She was music director and producer for several stage shows that toured Europe, Asia and South America.
O’Hare is a highly respected and sought-after performer and teacher of traditional Irish music on the uilleann pipes, concert flute, and tin whistle. He was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, where he continued the process of learning the tradition of uilleann piping from master pipers. In 1994, Kieran had the honor of being the first American-born player of Irish music invited to perform in the annual “Ace and Deuce of Piping” concert, held in Ireland’s National Concert Hall. Since then, he has made countless appearances at festivals and concerts across Europe, North and South America, Japan, and China. Among the many artists with whom Kieran has performed, toured or recorded are Mick Moloney and The Greenfields of America; fiddlers Liz Carroll and Jerry Holland; baroque performers Ensemble Galilei; the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra; Bonnie Raitt; The Paul Winter Consort; Josh Groban; and Don Henley.
Together Knowles and O’Hare have collaborated on many projects to compose, arrange, and perform music for large-scale European-based productions integrating traditional and contemporary Irish music with dance and song. In addition to their solo and duo projects they perform in the trio Open the Door for three, along with Dublin-born bouzouki player and singer Pat Broaders.
The concert is part of the long running “Concerts in West K!” series, produced by Mousam River Music in collaboration with the Brick Store Museum. The Museum is located at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk, adjacent to the town hall. The concert will be held in the Museum’s Dane Street Program Center, directly behind the museum proper. Admission to the concert is $25 per person; advance tickets or reservations are strongly advised. Tickets are available at brickstoremuseum.org/calendar; unpaid reservations may be made by e-mail to: [email protected].
