About this Event

STRUCTURE OF THE WORKSHOP

The San Francisco Historical Society and the Victorian Alliance of San Francisco are offering our third annual summer arts workshop for middle school students. This workshop is designed to teach young artists and architects about the history of San Francisco’s most famous architectural style-the Victorian. The workshop includes: a field trip to Alamo Square to tour a restored Victorian home followed by a picnic and "Ask the Expert" sessions. The workshop is weeklong with start time: 10am ; end time 1pm.

Schedule:

  • Monday & Tuesday: Art at the Museum—Begin Art Project (Design and draw your own “painted lady”)
  • Wednesday: Field Trip to a Restored Victorian in Alamo Square; Victorian Scavenger Hunt at Alamo Square
  • Thursday: Art at the Museum
  • Friday: Guest Speaker (“Ask the Expert”); Finish Art Project
  • Snack each day at 11:15, lunch at noon (bring your own).
  • For more information: https://www.sfhistory.org/summercamps/

STUDENTS WILL LEARN...

  • About Victorian architecture—what Victorians are; when they were built; what make them unique
  • Different styles of Victorians and their names (stick, Queen Anne, Gothic, Italianate)
  • Why it is important to preserve them and value them
  • Art techniques such as the color wheel, color theory, water color techniques, pencil drawing, and color vocabulary
  • During the “Ask the Expert” sessions, students get to know what it takes to be an architect; what an architectural historian does; and how art has a role in the design of buildings.
  • Most importantly of all, students learn about their own architectural heritage and spend a week creating an artwork that they can be proud of.

If you are a member or want to become a member of SHFS, the camp will be offered at a reduced price of $300. For more information, check https://www.sfhistory.org/memberships/.
