On Thursday, June 11, at 6:00 PM, I will give a presentation of "Into the River: The Story of Bristol’s 1896 Railroad Bridge Disaster" at the New Britain Public Library. The 1896 collapse claimed the lives of six railroad workers — including three men from New Britain: Martin Curry, James McNamara (identified in newspaper accounts as James Mack), and Patrick McCarthy, whose body was not recovered for seven years.
The tragedy struck one family especially hard — Curry and McCarthy were brothers-in-law, while McNamara and McCarthy were cousins.
This program revisits the events of that February evening and the recovery that followed.
One hundred and thirty years later, we remember their names.
The program is free and open to the public and presented by @The Friends of the New Britain Public Library.
