Featured at a wide range of venues, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, this Inuvialuit group from Aklavik, in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of Inuit Nunangat, was first formed in 1989. Reflecting a tradition of using songs and dances to recount the legends, stories and histories of their people, the group preserves and promotes cultural touchstones that were once at risk of being forgotten.
Although the members of Aklavik Delta Drummers and Dancers have changed over the years, strong familial links to drum dancing remain, with multiple generations of performers within a family. The group’s current members are Mason Arey, Dean Arey, Carol Oyagak, Herman Oyagak, William Greenland, Mary Gordon, and Edwin Gordon.
Aklavik is a community of around 600 people on the Mackenzie River Delta in the Northwest Territories, about 100 kilometres from the Beaufort Sea.
Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, are entitled to free admission.
