About this Event
Maryam Turkey is an Iraqi-American musician and award-winning visual artist based in New York. Her music blends haunting vocals, raw storytelling, and hypnotic rhythms. She sings primarily in Arabic with a broader influence, and her work draws from her roots in Baghdad and her life in the United States.
Her live performances incorporate the sampler, live percussion, and collaborations with experimental musicians including Shahzad Ismaily, Will Graefe, Kenny Wollesen, David Flaherty, James Buckley and Jesse Harris.
Her debut album Hiragt el Rouh, which comes out on Otherly Love Records this year, reinterprets Iraqi folk music through a contemporary, genre-fluid lens.
