This June, the “monsters” of classic literature are coming to Brockton, but they aren’t here to scare you—they’re here to tell a new story about identity, belonging, and the power of being “different.”On Thursday, June 11th at 5:30PM, Health Imperatives and the Brockton Area Gay Lesbian Youth Program (BrAGLY) will host the ensemble Shadow, Sound, Spectacle for a special Pride performance of their touring production, Literary Monsters. The free show is funded in part by the Brockton Cultural Council.
Literary Monsters is part rock concert, part puppet show, and part ghost story. This 50-minute multimedia performance reimagines gothic classics by Poe, Shelley, Irving, Dickinson, Stoker, and Melville through original live music, shadow puppetry, video, and narrative. The performers invite the audience to explore the question: What is a monster?
After the show, the artists will answer questions, offer a behind-the-scenes look at the puppetry used in the show, and facilitate a community discussion about queer identity and its historical relationship to the “monsters” of literature and pop culture.
