LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTMAKING
Class Date: Wednesday, November 8th
Time: 4:00 - 7:00pm
Venue: The Children's Art Carnival
Max. Participants: 15
This workshop will guide students through the process of linoleum block printing. Participants will learn how to draw or transfer an image onto a block, how to use relief carving tools to carve out their image, and how to properly roll out printing ink onto their blocks to create a linoleum print. The instructor will discuss how to create and print an edition, having each student leave the workshop with an edition of at least 3 prints.
Lino printing is considered a traditional relief printmaking method and is often referred to as lino cutting. In this technique, a design is carved into a linoleum block. The uncarved, raised surface (relief) is then inked using a brayer and printed onto paper or fabric with the aid of a baren. This process enables the production of multiple copies of the same artwork, known as editions.
Lino printing shares similarities with traditional woodblock printing. However, linoleum is favoured over wood due to its carving-friendly nature.
Michele Godwin is a multidisciplinary artist working in printmaking, textiles, and ceramics. In 2021, she was awarded an EFA Blackburn Legacy Fellowship, a fellowship reserved for artists who worked with Robert Blackburn. She currently teaches relief and collagraph workshops at EFA RBPMW, where she first began as a printshop monitor in the mid 1980s. Around the same time, Michele came to the Children’s Art Carnival where she worked with Betty Blayton-Taylor as a teaching assistant. She will be returning to participate in CAC and EFA RBPMW’s collaborative pilot program Press n’ Pull.
