Our Guest Speaker:
Juliana Carvalho is an award-winning disability advocate, bestselling author, and inspirational speaker. Born in Brazil, she became paraplegic at 19 and turned her life-changing experience into a powerful platform for social change.
She created and hosted the Brazilian public TV show Make a Difference, directed the award-winning short film If the Eyes Cannot See, The Legs Cannot Feel, and won Marie Claire Brazil’s Best True Story Award. Her autobiography In My Chair or Yours? sold over 30,000 copies in Brazil, with the English edition reaching Amazon’s Top 100 Hot New Releases.
Since 2012, Juliana has called Aotearoa home and is a vocal leader in the disability sector.
In her talk Charge Forward: Transforming Crisis into Opportunities, Juliana shares how life-altering setbacks—from sudden disability to systemic discrimination—became the foundation for purpose, leadership, and service. With humour, honesty, and powerful storytelling, she challenges audiences to rethink adversity, harness resilience, and turn personal challenges into meaningful impact for their communities.
