Linda Nemec Foster, the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Grand Rapids, will present "The Lake Huron Mermaid: A Tale in Poems" at the Copper Chimney Poetry Series on Sunday, May 17th, 2026, 4-6PM. The event, located in the Copper Chimney Lounge of the University United Methodist Church, 1120 S. Harrison Rd., East Lansing, is open to the public and free of charge. Donations are greatly appreciated. FREE parking is available behind the church.An Open Mic will take place after Foster's presentation. Attendees who would like to share a poem are invited to drop their names in the multicolored basket at the Gate Table.
Foster will present poems from her latest book, "The Lake Huron Mermaid," which was co-authored with her friend Anne-Marie Oomen and illustrated by Meridith Ridl. The book, published in 2024 by Wayne State University, is a sequel to "The Lake Michigan Mermaid," which was honored as a 2019 Michigan Notable Book.
Linda Nemec Foster is the author of fourteen collections of poetry, and a 2024 Distinguished Favorite in the NYC’s Big Book Award in Poetry. Her first full-length book of prose poems, "Bone Country," was published in 2023 and nominated for 20 book awards including the Pulitzer Prize. She is the founder of the Contemporary Writers Series at Aquinas College.
The Copper Chimney Poetry Series is produced by the Lansing Poetry Club.
