Lincoln-West New Building Design - Community Meeting

Hello everyone. I attended the first community meeting on February 17th. There were maybe 6 of us total (community members). The lead architect showed us his design of the new LW which is going to be built on top of the current site after the demolition. For the most part, the design is nice: 1 large competition gym with an entrance separate from the school building, 1 smaller practice gym, an auditorium that seats 600, a 3-story building with classrooms and administrative offices, a medical lab, special education classes integrated in each level. The pool, underground parking, and indoor track will not be included which is unfortunate but unavoidable.
However, one thing IS avoidable and within our control to demand change.
The WORST aspect of the current LW, in my opinion, is the large and always vacant parking lots on each side of the building. Unfortunately, the lead architect's new design has the same 2 parking lot set up (although one is smaller than the other this time). As you all know, LW has NO field for our football, baseball, or championship winning soccer team. NOW is a great opportunity for us to provide them with at least a small field to run drills, kick goals etc... The lead architect insists that LW needs over 300 parking which just isn't true. I tried to tell him about the endless street parking available that people use instead of the parking lots but he brushed that off. He isn't from here, but we are. Now is a great time for us to get together and advocate for some sort of outdoor practice space for current and future students. If money is an issue, we can raise money for materials. Nothing will change unless we get together and demand that it be an option. If any of you guys remember running drills on the concrete, walking over to Clark field for practice, or just walking past the enormous wasted space and imagining how our school experience would have been better with grass, a garden, a small turf field, now is a good time to make that a possibility for the next generation. I'll be there on April 1st at 6pm and I hope to see you guys too. Spread the word.
