Welcome to Murmansk in Northern Russia, also known as the land of snow, endless tundra, and the Aurora Borealis!A city on the Kola Peninsula, 200km north of the Arctic Circle, Murmansk is arguably one of the best places from within the polar regions to view the Northern Lights – a beautiful natural phenomena.
Formed in the ionosphere, the Northern Lights occur when electrons and protons, emitted from the sun, are carried by solar wind towards Earth.
Upon entering the Earth's atmosphere and interacting with our planet’s magnetic field, the sun molecules emit nitrogen and hydrogen, to cause the glowing phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis.
Our accommodation for 3 days will be in Igloo type Aurora Cabins that offer you a spectacular panoramic view of the Northern sky from the comfort of your bed. The domes are extremely cosy and warm, with floor heating when the temperatures drop at night - there’s even a wood stove! Our cabins will have large bathrooms with excellent showers, a table, and chairs - all well positioned to ensure beautiful views of the lake.

Day 0: Say bye to warmth!
Meeting at 2pm at T3 for a flight at 4pm by Emirates to Moscow, further connecting flight to Murmansk.
Day 1: Arrival to Murmansk
We arrive at Emperor Nicholas II Murmansk Airport, and after clearing immigration we will be transported to our 4* hotel to rest. We then head out on a city tour, visiting the Lenin “icebreaker” – a Soviet nuclear-powered icebreaker launched in 1957. It was both the world’s first nuclear-powered surface ship and the first nuclear-powered civilian vessel. After lunch we will venture out onto our first Aurora hunting tour before dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: Teriberka village
After breakfast we head to the shores of the Barents Sea towards the village of Teriberka – 120km from Murmansk. After a three hour drive down an icy road, we will be greeted by scenes from a great art piece, or a horror movie (your choice) as the abandoned houses of Teriberka emerge in view. Home to just 617 residents, Teriberka was made famous by the 2015 Oscar-nominated drama Leviathan. Here we will visit a wooden ship cemetery dating back to the Imperial Era, before jumping on our snowmobiles!
Day 3: Saami people and husky dog sledding
Today we head to the Saami settlement, one of the largest tourist complexes in the Kola Peninsula. Here, we will meet the Saami people’s precious reindeers, who are surprisingly affectionate and enjoy being stroked and fed by visitors. Surrounded by vast countryside, we will see even more wildlife – including polar foxes, hares, and hunting birds – as we learn about the ancient Saami culture, go reindeer sledding and play some traditional games – lasso throwing anyone?
Day 4: Kirovsk city and snowmobiling in Khibiny
Today will tour the city of Kirovsk. The afternoon sees a change of pace as we carve up our own ice with a snowmobile safari into the Khibin Mountains. Drive to the Lovozero tundra through the mountains, to be greeted by lunch in the wilderness, followed by a Russian banya (sauna/bath) in the evening before dinner, at our Aurora Village.
Day 5: Ice fishing and departure
After breakfast we get to experience some traditional ice fishing, trying to catch white fish that we’ll take back to the guesthouse for lunch – before making our way to the airport for our flight home.
Level of difficulty:
Easy, available for everyone (temp range 0C to -10C).

Activities:
Husky dog sledging, snow mobile drive, ice fishing, sightseeing, and soaking in the Northern Lights from your own bed.
Accommo & meals: 2 nights in 4 star hotel, 3 nights in Aurora Igloos, double sharing. Dinners on day 3 & 4 included.
Specifically excluded: Visa, meals, PCR testing and insurance.
