About this Event
IN PERSON EVENT
Join award-winning American lighting duo James Benya and Deborah Burnett, and leading architects, building engineers and healthcare providers, for this timely debate about the value of (and barriers to) integrating daylighting with artificial lighting in healthcare settings hosted by Colin Ball, Lighting Director at BDP.
The symposium is structured in two sessions:
- The first, a lighting industry debate will focus on technical questions and review new research on the impact of mitochondrial infra-red: Circadian PLUS.
- Following a break to meet with our supporting manufacturers, the second session will bring critical perspectives from outside the lighting bubble: we'll hear from leading architects, engineers and their clients.
- We close the evening with an informal discussion over a drink.
Session 1 for lighting specifiers: 3.00pm – 5.00pm
Deborah and James will present their research that describes the broader implications of the physiological effect from the electromagnetic spectrum; the shortcomings of the LED; the ways in which the lighting specification sector must demonstrate their competence in the field of delivering active healthful lighting schemes.
An overview of Circadian PLUS by Colin Ball (BDP.)
How health, well-being, and sustainability agendas are driving client demands beyond lighting to an integrated approach to light in space that includes daylight and smart controls.
Open discussion curated by John Bullock (editor, The Light Review)
What will be the implications for lighting designers and manufacturers?
Dr. Shelley James will introduce the session.
Networking and interaction with lighting manufacturers/sponsors
Session 2 for healthcare service providers: 6.00pm – 8.00pm
The Body Speaks by Deborah Burnett and James Benya.
Vital emerging research on the physiological effects of both visible light and radiation beyond the visible into the wider electromagnetic spectrum, with particular focus on the enclosed nature of the healthcare environment.
Overview of Circadian PLUS by Colin Ball
The expanding role of the lighting designer in an interdisciplinary practice. Bringing together health + wellbeing with sustainability needs, building standards and energy codes through smart integration of daylighting with artificial lighting strategies.
Case study: Architect, client and MEP consultant (BDP)
The session will be Introduced by Dr. Shelley James.
8:00 to 8:30pm Networking and close
