About this Event

The two areas of highly specialised work within the Ahimsa service are: Behaviour and Attitudinal change for those who are/have been domestically abusive, and work with the partners and ex-partners of these clients, offering support, information, trauma recovery and pattern-changing work. Both sides of the service work in close liaison with each other, jointly planning to manage risk, to understand the dynamics in the relationships and to identify helpful interventions on both sides of the work to achieve the best outcomes for the (ex)-families and individuals involved. The main aim of Ahimsa is to promote, facilitate and support non-violent and loving relationships, so to enhance the wellbeing of all, whether or not the families are together or separated.

We are committed to delivering long term support and engagement, facilitating meaningful change. Perpetrators of domestic abuse, that cause harm, are often marginalised and vilified, we listen to their voices and work with them to enable positive behaviour change to the benefit of them, their ex/current/future partners, their children and their wider communities. We deliver a range of models which support individuals different needs, for example our core perpetrator programme (DAPP) receives predominantly self-referrals for those deemed standard-medium risk, whereas our High-Risk High Harm project in collaboration with Plymouth and integrated with the Police, Probation and other statutory bodies, supports individuals who are deemed as High-Risk High Harm and display more complex support needs. Individuals in the High-Risk High Harm programme may have drug and alcohol addiction, housing needs and/ or engagement with social services or criminal activity. Each cohort presents with different level of support needs, and individual characteristics which we respond to on an individual basis.

The integrated partner support service sits alongside the DAPP and is an integral part of the success of the programme. When a perpetrator is referred we request details of their current and any ex-partners with whom they have children. We then proactively reach out to partners to offer safety advice and support to help them with recovery from trauma, managing conflict over child contact, moving forwards with their lives, setting boundaries and making space for themselves and their children to lead a happy, trauma free life. We continue to support the victim on a 1-2-1 basis, regardless of whether the perpetrator completes or disengages from the programme, for up to 18 months.
