About this Event

Join this exploration of the Fort Funston beach as we take both an artistic and natural history perspective. Exploring the beach wrack as well as other aspects of beach ecology will reveal connections between both art and science. We will highlight both plant and animal species as we discover them and explain their role in this community.

An added bonus is fascinating geological formation known as the “Merced Formation” and at the end of our walk we will visit the bank swallow site before we head back to our starting point via the sand ladder trail.

Walk Leaders: Josie Iselin and Emil Fogarino

Josie is a photographer, author, and designer of many books, with her last few focusing on the world of seaweeds and kelp. Josie is the co-director of a collaborative known as Above/Below, working to bring the recognition afforded the forests on land to the kelp forests below the ocean’s surface.

Emil is a local naturalist and educator who retired from teaching marine biology and natural history at Washington High SF. As a native San Franciscan Emil enjoys sharing and learning about the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Details:

If you are interested in marine biology, how a local artist uses materials from our beach wrack and the general ecology and beauty of our shoreline, then this is the walk for you!

Josie will bring a bunch of her books, many of which (Beach Stones, Seashells and An Ocean Garden: The Secret Life of Seaweed especially) began with specimens collected from Fort Funston. Signed copies of the books can bee purchased as well.

This walk will be Moderate difficulty with a sandy descent and ascent to the beach, plus walking for a distance along the beach.

Preparation:

People may want to bring water, snacks and layered clothing to accommodate the potential for coastal wind, fog, sun or all three! Footwear should be comfortable for both sand and trails. The total distance is approximately four miles with a climb up the Fort Funston sand ladder to take us back to our starting point.

Meeting Location:

Meet at the "hang gliders deck" at the end of the main parking lot. Look for the orange wind sock!

Parking is free and abundant.

Transportation:

The nearest lines within walking distance are the L-Taraval and the 29 bus.

Weather:

Heavy rain will cancel. We will send out an announcement the morning of the walk if we decide to cancel.

Cost:

This walk is FREE to attend (with RSVPs kindly requested).

Donations (in cash) can be made to Nature in the City on the day of the event. Special bonus! Everyone who donates $10 and above will receive a copy of the Nature in the City Map.

Or become a Nature in the City supporter and receive early-bird invitations to all our future walks, among other fun perks.
