A drawing session that explores how gesture emerges through bodily sensing and observation
About this Event

SOMATIC GESTURES

This Special Edition explores gesture through embodied observation. Drawing remains rooted in observing the human form. Attention is also given to how that observation is registered in the drawer’s own body before it is named, interpreted, or symbolised.

Observation takes place through bodily sensing as well as vision. As you observe the model, physical sensations, impulses, or shifts of attention may arise. These bodily responses influence how the form is perceived. From there, gesture begins to take shape on the page.

The session invites participants to notice this exchange between sensation and vision. The session unfolds through a series of guided drawing exercises. Internal responses shape what is noticed in the form. Those perceptions translate into marks. Gesture is approached as something that emerges through a back and forth between bodily response and visual attention. The drawing develops from there.

By orienting observation towards bodily sensation, the session offers a supportive way of working. It can ease strain. It can reduce overthinking. It can offer a grounding experience that supports presence and regulation.

The session follows a familiar life-drawing format with a life model. No prior experience in drawing or somatic practices is required. Drawing remains central throughout. Participants are free to engage in their own way and at their own pace.

Anik Life Drawing — Special Editions

One evening session each month at People’s Park Tavern.

Most sessions centre on drawing from the figure. Each edition introduces a particular way of working, which may shape how the session is structured. Depending on the theme, some sessions may also include other forms of drawing or sensory-led exercises alongside figure work.

The sessions are informed by Erica Smith Ramos’ practice, which includes drawing, painting and photography, with a background in graphic design, alongside over 18 years of experience as a life model. Experience on both sides of life drawing, observing and being observed, has shaped an understanding of life drawing as a therapeutic practice grounded in attention and presence.

Each edition works around a simple ‘food for thought’. Depending on the session, this may take different forms.
Themes may include:

  • technical focuses (such as line, weight, proportion or composition)
  • process-led or experimental approaches
  • conceptual or philosophical ideas
  • perspectives informed by wellbeing
  • ways of thinking about how we relate to the body, to drawing and to attention

All while remaining grounded in life drawing as a regular practice.

The sessions are guided but open. There is structure for those who want it and space for those who prefer to work independently.

All levels are welcome. No experience is needed, whether you are new to life drawing, returning to it, or simply want a place to draw.
