The tree we’ll plant this day is a direct descendant of Maryland’s Liberty Tree. It stood on the grounds of St. John’s College in Annapolis, adjacent to the State House and capitol grounds. The tree is said to be the last of the original Liberty Trees. It lived about 400 years until fatally damaged by Hurricane Floyd’s winds in 1999.A direct descendant of the original tree was planted on the college campus by a graduating class in the 1890s. Seeds from this tree are collected annually by an arborist who retired from the Maryland Forest Service. Of the seeds he collected in 2025, 33 germinated. A seedling was given to each of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City for planting in the USA 250 celebrations. The Archive was selected to receive one of the remaining nine seedlings.
