The public is encouraged to attend, and voting will be open for LHS members in good standing. We will be joined by Arlene Purcell, speaking about the 1935 mine disaster in Coalhurst, commemorating the 90th anniversary of this tragic event, and her play Firedamp.
The 90th anniversary of the December 1935 Coalhurst mine disaster is a major milestone for the community, marking a defining event in local history when a firedamp (methane gas) explosion at the Imperial Mine tragically killed 16 miners, leaving deep scars on Coalhurst and southern Alberta.
Arlene Purcell is recognized for her role in preserving the mine disaster’s legacy through her acclaimed three-act play, "Firedamp," originally written and staged in 1998 by an all-student cast from Coalhurst High School. The play is valued for engaging youth and the broader community in the heritage and resilience of Coalhurst.
