About this Event

EVENT INFORMATION - A bar or club isn’t what you first think of when you hear the word community. Yet, the LGBT Civil Rights Movement started at the Stonewall Inn, a bar. Bars, clubs, and lounges have served as community spaces for decades. Bars and clubs serve as a space where our community can be ourselves without prosecution. When a bar or club closes, we lose part of our community.

The purpose of the panel is to chronicle how bars and clubs have been places of community while event promoters create spaces in places that straight people normally conjugate to. Within the LGBTQIA Community are smaller communities. Depending on how you self-identify, there are certain bars and clubs you would go to to feel community. We will explore bars and clubs that have closed years ago and provide communities such as Remingtons and Sheridans who enticed those in the Levi Community while the leather community found a home at The DC Eagle.

With the edition of new bars and clubs, we can explore how these establishments fit in within our community. We can explore how community can be found in drinking establishments. We can explore how bars provide a social outlet for people who have little opportunity to meet people in our community. We can explore how bars and clubs allow individuals in our community to be who they are without exploitation and/or prosecution. Our panels include panelists who actually own managed and own bars and clubs within our community. Our moderators are media publishers who covered events at these establishments.
