ESSO FUNK (often styled as ÉSSO or ESSO Afrojam Funkbeat) is a Chicago-based music ensemble known for their high-energy, multicultural sound. Founded in 2013 by Mexican-American songwriter Armando Pérez, the band blends Afro-Caribbean, Latin, jazz, and rock influences to create a rhythmically diverse dance experience. ESSO's music is often described as an "afrojam funkbeat". They merge diverse elements like Chicano and Boricua roots music, Cuban son, and Fela Kuti-inspired Afrobeat with the urban sounds of Chicago (like house music and hip-hop). Their lyrics are often bilingual and politically conscious, focusing on themes of community unity, immigrant experiences, and social awareness.
