On 17 May 1649, three soldiers were executed on Oliver Cromwell’s orders in Burford churchyard, Oxfordshire. They were Levellers, whose beliefs included equality, civil rights and religious tolerance. They stood up to Cromwell’s arrogance and they were shot for their principles.Levellers’ Day has been an annual celebration of the fight for justice and equality since 1975. The spirit and demands of the Levellers remain so relevant and important that we continued our annual commemoration online for the past two years. So we are delighted to announce that this year we will be gathering in person. Our theme for 2022 is defending democracy, defending our right to protest and defending communities being attacked by the draconian legislation forced on us by this most toxic of governments.
The programme will include the annual acts of remembrance at Burford Church at 11am followed by discussion and debate of the Levellers’ legacy. We need their inspiration and example now more than ever.
Speakers include: Reverend Professor Mark Chapman, Shami Chakrabarti, Richard Burgon, Ted Vallance, Professor Laura Stewart, Dr Rachel Hammersley, Sharon Graham and Chantelle Lunt.
Music from: Red Kites, Sea Green Singers
Full programme and list of stalls to follow.
The event is free but please do register so that we have an idea of numbers expected.
