This session led by the Eastern Statewide Perkins Consortium Director and Southeast Technical College's Director of Access and Workforce Opportunity will help employees to navigate culturally effective practices in the workplace (and classroom). With the growth and integration of special populations in our communities, this will provide an opportunity to safely discuss concepts shared in Verna Meyers' book, "What If I Say The Wrong Thing?" Particular attention and scenarios will be dialogued to better assist special populations. You are not required to read the book ahead of time and handouts will be provided.Dr. Vande Kamp serves as the Director of the Eastern South Dakota Perkins Consortium. In this role, she offers vision and guidance for Career and Technical Education (CTE) across 36 school districts in Eastern South Dakota, collaborating closely with the South Dakota Department of Education (SD DOE). Together, they implement long-term planning for the consortium and ensure all federal, state, and local laws are observed with fiscal responsibility to meet specific grant, programmatic requirements and assessments.
For the past 14 years, Marcella Prokop has worked to ensure that college is accessible and welcoming for international, immigrant and refugee students, students like her mom, students who have experienced interrupted education and are caring for families, working multiple jobs and learning academic language while also improving their English. For the last three years, she has worked as the director of access and workforce opportunity at Southeast Technical College, a role that has allowed her to build programming for first-generation college students of all backgrounds, and programs for multilingual and Native American high school students to assist them in preparing for, enrolling in and succeeding in college.
Marcella is currently working on her PhD through Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virgina, where her research is grounded in exploring writing and storytelling supports for displaced people.
