Let’s Talk About Art: Madama ButterflyIn partnership with Lyric Opera of Chicago
Join us for a special two-part Let’s Talk About Art program centered on Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, presented in partnership with Lyric Opera of Chicago.
The program begins with a virtual talk on Monday, March 10 at 1:00 PM, offering participants historical, cultural, and artistic context for the opera, along with insight into Lyric Opera’s production. This session is designed to support both opera newcomers and longtime enthusiasts, providing tools to deepen understanding of the work’s themes, music, and staging.
Participants will then attend a live performance on Tuesday, March 11 at 1:00 PM at the Lyric Opera House, experiencing the opera with a shared framework for reflection and discussion.
Madama Butterfly tells the story of Cio-Cio-San, a devoted young geisha whose love for U.S. Navy lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton leads to devastating consequences. Everyone but Butterfly foresees the heartbreak to come. Puccini’s soaring, often heartbreaking score brings together unforgettable melodies, lush orchestration, and emotional depth.
This production, directed by Matthew Ozawa, brings fresh dimension to an age-old story, with Domingo Hindoyan conducting and Karah Son, one of the leading interpreters of Cio-Cio-San of our time, starring in the title role. Audiences will be immersed in gorgeous costuming, striking sets, and powerful performances that resonate across generations.
