Let’s Play is an invitation to experiment and loosen control with kilnformed glass
About this Event

Let’s Play is an invitation to experiment, to loosen control, and to treat kilnforming as a space for curiosity and creativity rather than certainty. Rooted in play and under the instructors’ expert guidance, this approach values process over expectation and students will be encouraged to embrace chance, risk, and the kiln as an active collaborator.

Instead of aiming for repeatable outcomes, Let’s Play asks: What happens if we try this Through layering, the use of unconventional materials and techniques such as flexible glass and powder printing, and altered firing schedules for both fusing, slumping and bending, together with intuitive decision-making, the class will explore how glass responds when rules are bent or temporarily ignored. Success will not be measured by perfection, but by discovery. Unexpected reactions, flaws, and surprises will be treated as information on which to build further exploration rather than mistakes. At its core, Let’s Play reframes kilnforming as a discussion between maker, material, and heat—one grounded in experimentation, openness, and joy. By approaching the kiln with a playful mindset, the process becomes a tool for learning, innovation, and creative freedom, expanding both personal practice and the expressive potential of glass. The class will be complimented by presentations on historical and contemporary glass, technique and creativity.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flat shop, without instruction, on Tuesday - Friday from 5-8pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.

What to Expect: Students will create 3-6 works along with several experiments, no bigger than 10” in any direction, utilizing available sheet glass, frit, and powders. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities, including preparing glass pieces for firing, and loading and unloading the kiln. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: Basic kilnforming skills such as fusing and slumping are required for this class. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: Students may have to return after the last day of class for any work fired during the last class.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
