About this Event

Join Insights North East and the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) for the second Lessons from Japan seminar featuring Professor Naoki Fujiwara, Vice Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Regional Development Studies, Otemon Gakuin University, Osaka and Dr Kean Fan Lim, Reader in Economic Geography in CURDS.

The seminar will begin with a presentation by Naoki exploring Osaka’s approach to mission-led governance from a metropolitan policy perspective, highlighting how national industrial missions are operationalised and expanded by local governments.
Facing long-term challenges of deindustrialisation and relative decline within a highly centralised national economy, Osaka has adopted a pragmatic strategy that combines advanced industrial policy with broader urban and social objectives. Naoki’s presentation will illustrate how metropolitan governments can align national missions with local priorities by combining industrial policy, urban design, and social investment.

Kean will then focus on mission-led governance at the national level. Following both presentations, Naoki and Kean will be joined by a small panel providing insights from a UK perspective.
