About this Event
Newfoundland is an island province on Canadaโs east coast. It is half the size of Great Britain with a population the size of Cardiff. Newfoundland has wonderful subarctic landscapes and it hosts an amazing hardy flora especially in areas of limestone and serpentine rocks, with many hardy orchids and a wide range of alpine plants. The cold-current waters surrounding the island host huge populations of seabirds and whales, making this a magical place to visit for anyone with an interest in wildlife and the environment.
Carole and Ian Bainbridge are both former Presidents of the Scottish Rock Garden Club and members of the RHS Alpine and Rock Garden Expert Group. They have been growing alpines for about 45 years and started their Galloway garden from scratch fifteen years ago. They have a particular expertise in crevice gardens. Caroleโs career in business was followed by fifteen years as a garden designer; Ian is an ecologist/conservationist who was for eight years chief ecological adviser to the Scottish Government. They have also travelled extensively to see alpines in their natural habitats.
