About this Event
Mālama Maunalua invites you to join us on Tuesday, June 9th from 5:00 - 8:00pm at the Waikīkī Aquarium for a special lei making workshop led by Kawehi Perry-Ah Hoy. In this unique hands-on experience, participants will learn about traditional and contemporary lei making practices using native and invasive plants gathered from mauka to makai.
Kawehi will share different lei making techniques, discuss the importance of sustainably harvesting plants and flowers to support biodiversity and long-term ecosystem health, and explore how invasive algae can be thoughtfully repurposed into limu lei. During her time volunteering with Mālama Maunalua, Kawehi was inspired to teach limu lei as a way to connect cultural practice with environmental stewardship and to help people build deeper relationships with the ecosystems around them.
Kawehi has been connected to flowers and lei making since childhood through hula, family traditions, and everyday moments of gathering and sharing aloha. She believes that gifting lei to loved ones can be one of the simplest yet most meaningful expressions of love and appreciation.
This workshop offers an opportunity to connect culture, conservation, and community while learning how caring for our landscapes and oceans are deeply intertwined.
