Following up on our spectacular, sold-out program with Broadway legend Susan “Stro” Stroman, and exclusive to the Cinema Arts Centre–we now bring both Broadway and Hollywood to Long Island with the one-and-only Marc Shaiman – the beloved stage and screen composer, lyricist, producer, and performer who has been showered with multiple Tony, Grammy and Emmy Awards, alongside seven Oscar nominations for his incredible scores and songs. In conversation with the Cinema’s two-time Emmy Award winner Jud Newborn, Marc Shaiman looks back on five decades of show business, interspersed with live performances of the familiar tunes we’ve come to love. Marc was recently profiled in a CBS Sunday Morning featured segment, and appeared on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show performing with Nathan Lane.
Broadway superstar Patti LuPone will also appear as Marc’s special guest, joining him during the show to perform one of his beloved songs. Marc will also accompany the Northport High School Concert Choir for a rousing end to the program, prior to the book-signing reception.
Marc Shaiman's film credits include Sister Act, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, Mary Poppins Returns, The Addams Family, City Slickers, A Few Good Men, The American President, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and dozens more. On Broadway, his shows include Hairspray, Some Like It Hot, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Smash and more. His work for television includes Only Murders In The Building and Saturday Night Live, where he became fast friends with some of their greatest cast members, and a recording career that includes working beside Harry Connick, Jr. and Mariah Carey.

With a wickedly funny memoir as a guide, Marc will regale us with stories about working with Bette Midler, Rob Reiner, Billy Crystal, Martin Short, Whoopi Goldberg, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and many more in a special night of music, laughter, and conversation.
ABOUT THE BOOK
From the award-winning composer/co-lyricist behind such iconic projects as Hairspray, Sister Act, Mary Poppins Returns, and Smash comes a wickedly funny, no-holds-barred memoir.
Marc Shaiman is a genius, a doll…. Fifty years ago, he turned up at my rehearsal, sat down at the piano, and hasn’t left since…. This saga is hilarious, riveting, and hair raising. So much of what I accomplished in my life would not have happened without him. -- Bette Midler
In Never Mind the Happy, musical dynamo Marc Shaiman looks back on five decades of Broadway triumphs, Hollywood hijinks, and unforgettable collaborations. Along the way, he charts the personal highs and heartbreaks that have shaped him—spending his teenage years in community theater, starting a decades-long collaboration with Bette Midler in the ’70s, surviving the AIDS crisis of the ’80s, his award-winning film music career in the Hollywood of the ’90s, right up to the peaks (and valleys) of creating Broadway musicals from 2000 on. Candid, hilarious, and deeply human, Shaiman’s story is a tribute to the power of music, the pull of the spotlight, and the beat that never stops. Part showbiz tell-all, part love letter to the melancholy that fuels creativity, this is a story told with perfect comic timing— along with a few wrong notes and plenty of standing ovations.
Marc Shaiman is responsible for more moments of musical joy in our collective lives than maybe any other living composer. -- Lin-Manuel Miranda
Marc Shaiman has written so many wonderful scores and musicals that it’s no surprise he's written this wonderfully charming ‘score’ of his life and career. -- Billy Crystal
