About this Event
Join us this Black History Month for an inspiring Legacy Lecture on the extraordinary life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm, led by historian and author Dr. Anastasia Curwood. As the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first Black person to seek a major party’s nomination for president, Chisholm’s impact on American politics and Black feminist power politics is undeniable. Dr. Curwood, author of Shirley Chisholm: Champion of Black Feminist Power Politics, will illuminate Chisholm’s bold advocacy, her trailblazing campaigns, and the continued influence of her work on social justice and equality.
Dr. Curwood brings a deep expertise in twentieth-century African American women’s history, blending intellectual, social, and political insights into Chisholm’s story. From her early life rooted in Caribbean heritage to her congressional career, Chisholm’s journey is one of resilience, courage, and unyielding dedication to justice.
