Lee Hildebrand died in Modesto Jan 24, two days before his 79th birthday. Lee was a smart, articulate, extremely knowledgeable and very nice man. Hildebrand wrote for the SF Chronicle, the East Bay Express( he was editor there), Oakland Tribune, Bay Guardian & numerous other music publications and compiled and wrote liner notes for record albums for Stax, Fantasy, HighTone and many other record labels. Lee was a very soulful musician and fan. He started as a drummer and played with everyone, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Louis Myers, Ron Thompson and Mark Hummel and more. Hildebrand both served as writer and editor of the East Bay Express but wrote for National publications such as Living Blues, Downbeat and many others. His Pink Section articles on music icons(James Brown, Al Green, John Mayall) in S.F. Chronicle will be missed. A couple years ago the Arhoolie Foundation paid tribute to Lee, who had Dementia and a stroke in 2017. Lee was a leading authority on West Coast black music history!
