About this Event
The Man Countries Call When They Can’t Pay Their Debts: Bloomberg’s Felix Salmon interviews Lee Buchheit.
What do these countries all have in common: the developing countries that couldn’t pay their debts in the 1980s, Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussain, and Greece, Ireland, and Iceland following the Great Financial Crisis? They all called lawyer Lee Buchheit for help—our guest speaker.
Lee C. Buchheit retired in 2019 after a 43 year career in private legal practice during which he travelled to all four corners of the globe to help countries in trouble with their debt. Though technically retired, he is still frequently called for advice, holds academic appointments (including at the University of Edinburgh), and is a prolific author and frequent speaker.
At this unique event Buchheit will share experiences from his working life, including answering questions such as: “What is it like to be with a finance minister the night before the country's central bank runs out of money?
The interview will be led by Felix Salmon of Bloomberg, the Slate Money Podcast, and the author of The Phoenix Economy. Salmon is widely respected for his career-spanning coverage of sovereign debt disputes, including his coverage of the famous Argentina bond litigation and 2014 re-default and the 2016 settlement.
