Pianist Pablo Arencibia and bassist Mauricio J. Rodriguez pay homage to legendary Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, re-imagining his iconic compositions as contemporary jazz masterworks. Lecuona famously blended Spanish traditions, African folklore, and European classical music – a legacy that resonates with Tampa-based Arencibia (of Spain) and Rodriguez (of Cuba), who share deep personal and geographical ties to the composer’s history. During a period of political and artistic disillusionment in Cuba, Lecuona spent several years in the 1960s living in Tampa, Florida, further deepening his connection to the region. This performance honors Lecuona’s boundary-shattering spirit and pursuit of musical freedom. Joining the ensemble for the special concert are guest artists Dimas Sanchez (drums), Lemay James (violin), and Carlos Navarro (percussion) for an evening of sophisticated Afro-Cuban jazz and cross-cultural expression.
