🧠Lecture: "The Dual Narratives of Saturday Night Live"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Carrie Andersen
When Saturday Night Live launched in 1975, it was a sharp, irreverent response to a fractured America—tearing into institutions in the wake of Watergate and Vietnam. But over time, its role has shifted.
In this talk, Dr. Carrie Andersen explores how SNL has evolved from subversive critique to something more complicated: a space that both challenges power and humanizes it. While the show still mocks political figures, it also gives them a stage to reshape their image—turning distant leaders into relatable characters.
We’ll unpack this tension and examine how modern satire operates in two directions at once: critique and softening. What does that mean for how we understand politics—and how should we watch?
Dr. Carrie Andersen is an interdisciplinary scholar and writer with a PhD in American Studies from UT Austin. Her work explores the politics of culture, including comedy, video games, and narratives of war in post-9/11 America.
