🧠 Lecture: "When Protest Was Called a Disease: Race & Health Equity"

🎤 Speaker: Dr. Jonathan M. Metzl

Join us for a powerful evening as Dr. Jonathan M. Metzl—physician, sociologist, and bestselling author—examines how race, medicine, and power collided during the civil rights era, and what that history means for health equity today.

Drawing on his acclaimed book The Protest Psychosis, Dr. Metzl traces how political protest was recast as mental illness and how Black men were systematically overdiagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1960s. He connects this troubling past to present-day debates about equity, sanity, and health, exploring how institutions respond to social change and how calls for justice are too often reframed as threats.

Highlighting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring vision of community, solidarity, and shared responsibility, Dr. Metzl invites us to think more clearly about today’s struggles over equity, community, and care. He argues that confronting uncomfortable histories is essential to building more just institutions now.
