🧠Lecture: "What Is Chivalry and Is It Dead? Knights, Ladies, Love"
🎤 Speaker: Sydney Mitsunaga-Whitten
We tend to think of knights, ladies, and courtly love as fantasy—the stuff of fairy tales, armor, and romantic clichés. But the chivalric romances of the medieval world were doing something much more serious: building an ethical system, a code for how to live, how to desire, and how to be a person of honor.
At the heart of these stories lies a glorious impossibility: the knight caught between the rigid demands of chivalric duty and the consuming, often forbidden pull of courtly love. In this lecture, we’ll explore that tension and the unforgettable tales it produced—Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Iseult, Gawain and the Green Knight—and consider what they still reveal about love, loyalty, and obligation today.
Join us for an evening of myth, morality, and medieval romance brought into conversation with our modern ideas about love and honor.
