🧠Lecture: "Trump and the Fall of Republican Leadership"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Seth Masket
Join us for a compelling evening as political scientist Dr. Seth Masket unpacks how the Republican Party evolved over the past three decades to make a second Donald Trump nomination not only possible, but inevitable—and why that path is historically unprecedented.
Drawing on hundreds of conversations with local Republican Party leaders across the country in 2023 and 2024, Dr. Masket reveals a striking paradox: many party leaders were deeply uneasy about renominating Trump, worried about his electability and aware of numerous qualified alternatives. Yet they found themselves powerless to shape the outcome.
Dr. Masket will explore how a newly empowered populist base—fueled by hardline views on immigration and open disregard for traditional party elites—has reshaped the GOP, sidelining its own leadership and transforming how nominations are won.
Seth Masket is a professor of political science at the University of Denver and a leading scholar of American parties and campaigns. He is the author of several books on U.S. political parties, including the forthcoming “The Elephants in the Room,” and writes for Politico, the L.A. Times, NBC.com, and his Substack newsletter “Tusk.”
