📚 Lecture: "The Power of Horror in Cinema"

🎤 Speaker: Professor AE Stevenson, Ph.D.

Horror has often been dismissed as a low genre, too focused on spectacle. However, in this illuminating lecture, Professor AE Stevenson will demonstrate that horror is a powerful lens through which we can explore societal norms, particularly in relation to gender and race.

Through classic and contemporary horror films, we will examine how the genre constructs and deconstructs notions of identity, using clips and theoretical frameworks to illustrate the ways these representations evoke confusion, fear, and repulsion. Attendees will come to understand the connections between gender, race, and class, gaining insights into human emotions and our response to an increasingly frightening world.

Professor Stevenson is an Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago, currently working on her book manuscript exploring the visual language of the Internet through the lens of Black women and girls. Her published work includes contributions to liquid blackness, Feminist Media Histories, and Catalyst.
