🧠Lecture: "The Hunt for Supermassive Black Holes"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Julie Rolla
Join us for a mind-bending evening exploring some of the most extreme particle accelerators in the universe: supermassive black holes. These cosmic engines are often hidden from view, but a special kind of “ghost particle” – the neutrino – can slip through their dense, turbulent environments and travel across the cosmos almost untouched, carrying rare clues about where it came from.
In this talk, experimental astrophysicist Dr. Julie Rolla will introduce ultra-high-energy neutrino astronomy and show how it’s opening a powerful new window on black-hole-driven phenomena. You’ll discover how scientists transform clear Antarctic ice and deep oceans into gigantic telescopes, catching the faint flashes of light and radio waves produced when a nearly invisible neutrino finally collides with matter.
Dr. Rolla’s work spans ultra-high-energy neutrinos, dark matter, AI-driven instrument design, and satellite remote sensing for disaster response and Earth science. She is known for making cutting-edge physics engaging and approachable.
