📚 Lecture: “The Chemistry and Crimes of Consumer Products”
🎤 Speaker: Prof. Julian R. Silverman
Join us for a fascinating evening with Prof. Julian R. Silverman as we uncover the hidden stories behind the everyday products we use—from soaps and perfumes to art supplies. This enlightening talk blends history, science, and product design to illustrate how chemistry shapes the safety and sustainability of these consumer goods.
Prof. Silverman will delve into the claims made about these products and spotlight the toxic chemicals that may lurk within, revealing how understanding these materials can inform or mislead us regarding risk and safety. Through engaging examples, he will highlight the role that chemistry plays in our daily lives and the implications it has for our well-being.
As an Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Dr. Silverman teaches courses on cosmetic chemistry and toxicology. His innovative research focuses on developing consumer products from waste materials, like transforming farm waste into synthetic vanilla. Currently, he’s exploring the communication of chemistry through symbols and logos found in advertisements and packaging.
