🧠Lecture: The Carceral Crisis & the Question of Abolition
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Timothy Malone
In the wake of the 2020 uprisings following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, phrases like “Defund the Police,” “Abolish Prisons,” and “Abolish ICE” broke into mainstream debate. But what do these demands actually mean, and how did we arrive at this moment of carceral crisis?
Drawing on his own experience as a formerly incarcerated scholar, Dr. Timothy Malone will trace the social, political, and economic forces that built the largest carceral system in world history. He will introduce key modern abolitionist thinkers and unpack what they argue we must do to confront and dismantle this system: What do abolitionists want? What might an abolitionist future look like—and how could it become reality?
Crucially, Dr. Malone brings an analysis from both sides of the wall, asking whether the Pr*son yard itself can be a site of abolitionist critique and struggle. Join us as we move from inside the Pr*son and back out again to reconsider carcerality, punishment, and the possibilities of real transformation.
