Join us for an enchanting evening with Professor Rita Lucarelli as we delve into the fascinating world of ancient Egyptian beliefs regarding magic and demons. This talk will illuminate what these concepts meant in antiquity, exploring archaeological findings, ritual objects, and texts such as the Book of the Dead to reveal how the ancient Egyptians protected themselves, sought divine assistance, and prepared for the afterlife.

Professor Rita Lucarelli is an Associate Professor of Egyptology at UC Berkeley and Faculty Curator at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology. With a focus on ancient Egyptian religion, her research encompasses funerary literature and demonology. She leads The Book of the Dead in 3D, a digital humanities project that enhances accessibility to Egyptian artifacts. Rita is also completing a monograph on ancient Egyptian demonology and teaches courses on Egyptian and comparative religion at Mount Tamalpais College in San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.
